Investing in kids

Besides because it is the right thing to do, here is yet more logic behind why we should all care about investing in the health and education of America's children, regardless of who they were born to, where they live, what color their skin, how much money their parents have, or by what name they call God.

Wow Leah. Interesting. I love you girl, but I have to disagree a little. Now ironically, PT and I talked the other day and told me i've been too...boring on the blog. So he basically asked me to spice things up..So I thought to myself, how? Then you go and post this article. So, please forgive me..But I believe the article suggests that we would solve budgetary issues tied to entitlement programs by creating an even bigger one in the form of universal Healthcare / Socialized medicine? Have you seen how bad healthcare is in England, Canada, Venequela, Brazil and Cuba? The folks with cash come here for their healthcare.

Part 2 of 2: Maybe...
--Maybe if we didn't give illegals free healthcare, tax breaks, welfare, free education for their kids and allowed them to work, we'd be better off
---Maybe if we had privatized Social Security, we'd be better off. I pay the maximum and expect nothing in return. I'd sign in a minute if I could opt out
--Maybe our kids would be better educated if we didn't have teacher's union's and could fire the dead beat
--Maybe if 1/4 of American muslims didn't condone suicide bombings we'd be ok (religion of piece my %$&)
--Maybe if we (the dems) didn't attach 20 Billion in spending (which includes subsidies for spinach and peanut farmers) we'd be better off
--Maybe if we didn't have a political party hoping for a US defeat in Iraq, we'd be better off (regardless if you disagree on how we got there)
--Maybe we'd spend less money in iraq if we could blow up a mosque or two that we know terrorists are hiding in
--Maybe if we didn't worry more about wal-mart than we do al-queda, we'd be better off...

Nighty night. Off to C-town for Memorial day.

Correction:

Should read:
--Maybe if we (the dems) didn't attach 20 Billion in spending (which includes subsidies for spinach and peanut farmers) to a war spending bill we'd be better off

Healthcare in the UK is not without its problems. Trying to get a doctors appt sometimes drives me round the bend. But it does ensure that people don't go bankrupt due to medical costs. the UK struggles with the idea of spending limitless cash to live for ever. Everytime me or my family has needed emergency care, we are very well taken care of and concerns about if we can afford it simply never enters our mind. We do have private medical insurance which allows us to get seen immeidately and avoid the queues which isn't really a good idea. The same docotrs treat the private patients. I have thought many times about opting out of this employer sponsored program.

Many countries don't have social Security. The old are neglected and life expectancy is severly curtailed.

Children would have better educations if they had better teachers and more funding. Not sure if the job could attract the talent required without the pay that unions ensure they get. I'm not a fan of unions but sometimes they are necessary.

Not entirely sure what victory in Iraq looks like. I just don't want any more soldiers or civilians dying for a cause I never believed in. Not even sure what the cause is. I am relatively certain that the money diverted to the War in Iraq would have been much better spent on education, healthcare and tax breaks although I don't have view of the US Governments budget. I've tried to read it but man is it long?!? Can I get the Executive Summary?

I am sure that becoming terrorist ourselves (and blowing up mosques) is not the answer.

Definitely agree that more engagement, more involvement, more debate, less ignorance, about what matters (ie al-queda, not wal-mart) is the preferred route.

What I guess the major struggle I have tossed and turned about is the lack of accountability of all the parties where it relates to education/war/healthcare. What made this country great (not familiar with england so please forgive me.. but any country that gave us the spice girls and david beckman cant be all that bad.. just teasing ya a little)

I have no problem with unions and the collective bargning approach to negioations.. However, the representation of the other families being affected were certainly not at the table.

I dont think it is fair that teachers are not ranked and school districts allowing children from illegals who do NOT pay in the system and we will eductate them for free. Where is my representation in that discussion. I have no problem dropping 25% of my income in support of schools/roads/SS/healthcare but it better go towards services that EVERYONE pays into. So, if the schools are letting in illegals and the teachers are not performing up to snuff. Then I want out.. I would like to privatize my taxes... (Dont worry Max... Your dad and godfather are sending you to private school)

Regarding the war. I have to admit I am somewhat ignorant regarding this subject and dont understand the scope and potential future harm that will result of an early withdrawl. However, I dont need to understand why drinking gasoline is going to kill me I just know it will... With that being said, I would have liked a time table with bench marks for us to get the heck out of there... We cant keep drinking gasoline and tell us we are making progress.. It isnt there.. The dems backed down at the main event.

thats all I have.. have a great weekend....

Joe, don't let anyone ever tell you that you don't have a great imagination. You try to hide in plain sight as a right-wing whack job, but you are a closet left lover. I bet you even, secretly, like whole wheat bread and enjoy James Taylor's music (just like Adrian and his favorite organic apple juice and Tiffany CD). You aren't fooling anyone with your ridiculous bravado.

Peace, love and K-mart,
Leah

Furthermore, the idea that children of illegals should be kept out of public schools is absurd. Do you think they are going to go back to their parents' country when they grow up? NO...they are going to be here (where they were probably born).

So, doesn't it make more sense to have them educated so they can get respectable jobs, pay taxes and positively contribute? Or, we can vindictively make sure they are pushed down, denied access to healthcare (would YOU prevent a sick child from getting medical care? If you can honestly say yes, then I don't want to know you.), uneducated and, all-in-all more likely to commit violent crimes. Which approach makes more sense?

See the bigger picture.

Wow. Lots here to respond to.
LA Dawn:
1. I agree, spice girls are over rated, but I actually like Beckham. I recently met him in Mexico City. He's a spokesman for Motorola and he was at a product launch. Nice guy. Being a US sports fan, I couldn't grasp how famous he globally. We pay him a lot of money just to show up. Don't forget the beatles.
2. Blowing up mosques was a little over stated. But if our soldiers are fired upon from a mosque, it should be fair game. That's more what I was referring to.
3. Despite the US lack of universal health care, life expectancy keeps going up in the country. How is that? hmmmmm. Most of the worlds dictators or people of wealth in other countries come here for really important surgeries (Cleveland Clinic).
4. You would probably be able to afford healthcare if taxes were lowered. Most companies would subsidize employees.
Leah:
1. My diet or taste in music doesn't dictate my politics. Not a wheatgerm fan or James Taylor. But I eat veggie sandwiches for lunch almost everyday and lots of salad. I listen to snoop dogg, Kanye West, etc. I drink Black and Blue Label scotch. I mostly eat chicken, but I have to have a steak once per week. Hardly right wing tastes. I don't like organic foods, over rated.
2. Children of illegals, who were not atleast born here should be kept out of schools.
3. So I am not that mean. I'll give an example: I would not prevent a sick child from getting treatment. Little Juan or Maria breaks their leg. Go get it fixed. Little Juan or Maria need braces, Tough cookies, I shouldn't pay for it. Big difference.
4. Illegals that can go to college will get college tuition breaks. US Citizens don't get that.
5. 60% of illegals are high school drop outs. Yeah, we need more of those in this country.

They came into this country illegally, and we have to treat them like we did something wrong? We won't have to round them up and send them back. Just don't let them get jobs, don't let them get welfare.

I am with god daddy on this one..

Look pay in the club and you can stay. Pay your vig... dont commit crimes and stay under the radar... There is no reason why I am going to hold my kid back to teach english as a second language to illegals...

Just to overcommunicate... My family sought and was granted political asylum... Joe Joe's dad served in the US armed forces... So this is stance is not from the mountain top.. it is a grass roots message..

love my wife... love my child... hate the current system that punishes our tax bracket to help people that illegally entered the country. Turning the page...

Leah -
You need to turn off anonymous comments when you put up such controversial posts! I've can't keep all these crazy posts stragiht!

PS I hate football (soccer). I have David Beckhams' autograph because I ran into him in a supermarket once. I only got it so I can sell it. I hate the Spice Girls. C'mon, the UK has brought you better music than that. What about Pink Floyd? The Sex Pistols? Arctic Monkeys?

Philistines!

Unions have a place and time. Most have outlived their usefulness in the USA but I bet some little children in Thailand could use a trade union! Teachers should be ranked. Just because you are a member of a union does not exclude you from having performance related performance appraisals.

You need to educate all children. Do not punish them because their parent's sought a better life for them. The only way for the world to equalise is through the education of all. Ignorance will continue to keep the world in a tail spin.

And that's all I have to say!

LaDawn,

The "anonymous" rabble-rouser is invariably Joe Barabas...Max's God Father. He and I have different political views and he likes to push my buttons (spurred on by my husband). What he lacks for liking Rush Limbaugh, he more than makes up for in having an awesome wife and beautiful baby boy. So, somehow, his karma is in balance there.

The other "anonymous" is my husband, who usually signs off as "Daddy Heisman" because he has a pipe dream that Max will someday win the Heisman trophy. Genetically, he's probably more likely to be the captain of the Math-aletes or Chess Club. LOL

Anonymous said...

Leah you take that back... Max is the man.. Doug Flutie was only 5'9 when he won the heisman.. and so did charlie ward... so keep the faith lady... max's dad was a pretty accomplished athlete in his day... the pile of trophies in the basement should have been your first clue...

I apologize for my posts being anonymous. I actually can't remember my user id and password. I'll correct my username / password issues soon. Joe Barabas es mi nombre. Hello LA DAWN.
Yes Leah, I like to push your buttons, and like you just as much. But I am pretty firm in my beliefs.

LA. The world will never equalize and should never equalize. The bible says the poor will always be with us. The re-distribution is not the way to correct, more free-markets would help. I give generously to charity, adopt soldiers in Iraq in addition to my sister and have a soft spot for a certain baby in Colorado. But if the re-distribution of wealth went any further, I would stop most of that to off set the increased taxed I'd have to pay to cover it.
--I think I agree that unions had a place 50 years ago, but are more political now than useful.
--One more question / point about illegal immigrations. If the argument today is that this nation is great because of our cheap uneducated labor pool, then Mexcio and most african and south american countries would be superpowers.
--If the world hates america so much, based on all these protests I see on the news, why do some many people come here illegally?

You can be firm in your beliefs. But that doesn't make you right. Only ignorant men won't entertain other points of views and learn from their mistakes of the past.

We'll entice him out of the dark side, leah. Do not lose faith.

Yeah, the bible says Moses saved on the animals on the planet from flooding and women were made from Adam's rib. Honeestly, you did not just reference the bible, did you?

American is not great because of its cheap labour pool. Whatcha been reading? America is great becasue of its belief that anything is possible. And the very low tax rates. Oh, and the greed underlying it all.

The world doesn't hate America just some of its decisions to impose itself on other nations. This will cause its downfall. Read the history books (not the bible). The Roman empire fell because of its expansion. the British empire fell because of its expansion.

America should focus on making itself more self sufficient, eg reducing dependence on middle east for oil, stop demanding cheap goods made with cheap labour from asia, live within its means.

Maybe Max will be a fashion designer. Sounds like Daddy H has given your wee little Max some pretty high expectations. That is some pressure for a little man!

PS Thanks for identifying yourselves!

PPS This is fun!

We would be independent if we could drill in Alaska. But guess who won't let us? US Democrats.

I did reference the bible relative to the poor. No matter what, there are going to be "have's and have not's", "Life's Winners and losers"
Equalization won't do it. Equalization to me was code for re-distribution of wealth / socialism.

We don't impose our will on other nations, we are not imperialistic. We have interests across the world, we are no different than China. You don't think that most of the crazies in Germany and France and many many parts of the UK (unfortunately) hate us? The US actually funds 80% of the world food bank, flips the bill for 40% of the UN, gives direct aid to many many nations around the world. If that's imperialism, then we should stop.
We are not trying to expand, we were not expanding when we were attacked on 9/11. When the USS cole was blown up. When the first WTC bombing happened, when 200 marines were killed in Lebanon, when we were attacked in Somalia, when we were peace keeping in Kosovo and I can go on and on.

How can we just stop importing from Asia? Britian does the same thing. That's not the problem (He amongst us without sin may cast the first stone (another bible reference).

By the way, I do believe in the bible. Maybe not every story verbatim, but I have a have a pretty deep faith. Which by the way, has been significantly deepened by the birth of Max. In order to become his God Father I had to get confirmed. He was my reason for taking classes and deepening my faith.

I agree, I love the debates.
